- The fixture will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium
- Owing to the COVID-19 situation, IPL 2021 will be played across 6 venues in India
The Indian Premier League (IPL) will return to India after 2 years as the country hosts the 14th edition of the tournament. Even though India is witnessing the highest ever single-day cases since the start of the pandemic, the tournament will be played as per the schedule, in bio-bubbles. A total of 6 cities will be hosting the 60 matches. Ahmedabad will host playoff fixtures, including the final on May 30.
Defending Champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will start their title defense against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the tournament opener at MA Chidambaram Stadium later today (April 9). The spin-friendly track might see the spinners ruling the proceedings once again. This year, no team holds the home advantage.
Talking of the fixture, MI are likely to be without Quinton de Kock's services. The left-handed batsman had only joined the team's camp earlier in the week and is ineligible for selection as he should be in isolation.
MI boast the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Kieron Pollard, Piyush Chawla, Trent Boult, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah to name a few. The franchise is once again a strong contender to lift the trophy.
Royal Challengers Bangalore will miss the services of Finn Allen at least for the opening fixture. He is serving the isolation period and isn't eligible for selection. Adam Zampa will also miss the opening fixture.
The rest of RCB's players are eligible for selection. Once again, captain Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers have much responsibility to steer the ship. Apart from them, the management will pin its hopes on Glenn Maxwell and Kyle Jamieson. Maxwell joined RCB for Rs 14.25 crore while Jamieson fetched a 15 crore contract.
MI won the title last year while RCB crashed out after losing the Eliminator.
