The defending champions and five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) have hit the ground running ahead of the much-awaited forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 edition, which starts from April 9 in Chennai.
The MI camp will play the season-opener versus Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Chinnaswamy Stadium, Chennai as no team will get the home advantage in the 14th edition of the premier tournament.
Ahead of the upcoming season, the MI squad commenced their preparations in full swing and have hit the nets after completing their quarantine period. On Saturday (April 3), the MI's official Twitter handle shared a video of the team's training camp on a hot sunny day in Chennai. The caption read, "Our boys raised the Thermometer even further on a hot day 1️ in Chennai #OneFamily #MumbaiIndians #IPL2021."
In the video, the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, new recruit Piyush Chawla, Suryakumar Yadav, Chris Lynn, Ishan Kishan, etc. were spotted sweating it out with their intense training regimes.
Prior to the new season, cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra backed MI to once again go deep into the tournament due to their core players and overall bench strength. He said on his Facebook page, "The Indian core is the Mumbai Indians' biggest strength and it is not only a core but one which can do the encore. You have Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik, Krunal, Bumrah and Rahul Chahar, they are the players who are going to play hundred percent in the playing XI and they are all match-winners in their own right.
Which team has this kind of Indian core, you will not get one of this quality anywhere because you may not find a better batsman than Rohit Sharma in white-ball cricket, a better bowler than Bumrah, and a better all-rounder than Hardik. Krunal is matching him shoulder to shoulder, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav have been absolute revelations," added Chopra.
The IPL 14 season will be held in six cities in India with the summit clash to be played at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on May 30.
Will MI become the first-ever side to win the IPL in three back-to-back seasons? Only time will tell...
