Chandigarh: Women in Punjab will travel free of cost in all public buses within the state from April 1 (Thursday), with the cabinet on Wednesday stamping its formal approval on the scheme, announced by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh earlier this month.
From tomorrow (April 1), women in Punjab can travel free of cost on all government buses within the state. The scheme was announced by the chief minister in the state legislative assembly on March 5, with the aim to empower women in the state. On March 31, the state cabinet formally approved the scheme.
Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, CM Captain Amarinder Singh wrote: “Happy to share that our Cabinet has approved free travel within the State for all women/girls of Punjab in State Transport buses from 1st April. I’m sure it will be a strong step towards further empowering the women of Punjab.”
Over 1.31 crore women across the state will be the beneficiaries of the scheme. They will now be able to travel free of cost in public buses, including Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation, Punjab Roadways Buses and city buses run by local bodies.
